Family Cyperaceae
A striking, tufted evergreen grass-like perennial forming neat, compact mounds of narrow, arching dark green leaves, each with a bright creamy/gold vertical band. Produces upright buff flower spikes from mid summer. Bears more than a passing resemblance to the popular house plant, Chlorophytum (spider plant), but is tough and hardy and will brighten a semi-shady spot in the garden throughout the year. Excellent in a pot.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in sun/shade. Tease out dead leaves in spring.
