Family Betulaceae
Originating from Central and Eastern Europe
When young, this species has a slender and compact shape making an upright and striking architectural statement. In maturity, it assumes a much wider shape and has a unique habit. The broadly oval shape of this Hornbeam variety can be truly stunning, with a sharply defined edge to its silhouette and a symmetry that makes the curvaceous crown very eye-catching if given plenty of space. Its ascending branches are densely clothed in rough-textured deeply serrated-edged leaves that turn bright yellow in autumn. In spring the tree is covered in conspicuous catkins 8cm long, followed by copious amounts of brown hanging seeds. As a native of the southern reaches of the UK, wildlife favours this tree with many bird and insect species feeding on it, roosting and nesting in its crown. Hardy and reliable in all parts of the UK in all soil types, this species is a great choice for larger gardens and is resistant to drought once established.
