Family Meliaceae
Originating from China
A spectacularly handsome deciduous tree, with tropical looking foliage, and bark that peels off in strips. Rarely available, this is the only hardy member of the mahogany family. Newly sprouted young leaves have an oniony taste and are cooked and eaten as a delicacy in China.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in sun/part shade. Will grow in chalky soil.
