Family Pinaceae
Originating from Mediterranean
A sacred tree, steeped in history and holy associations – it is mentioned more than any other tree in the bible. A stately specimen for a very large garden – it is slow growing but reaches colossal proportions when mature. However it is absolutely ideal for Niwaki (garden bonsai) for a smaller plot. It has a conical shape when young, developing a flat top when mature, with black, fissured, scaly bark. This is the oldest tree in cultivation.
Grow in a sunny position in moist but well-drained soil. Will tolerate a chalky soil.
Can be drastically reduced in size with pruning.
Height and spread after 10 years 8 x 5m
