Plant the Compact pink clematis ‘Acropolis’ in Your Garden

Rich rosy-pink/magenta flowers deliver a loud yet sophisticated pop to trellises and arbours. Delightfully delicate, its elegantly formed blooms have an upright cluster of pale golden stamens at the centre of the large velvety-looking petals. Perfect for viewing close-up, it is ideal for placing near outdoor seating on Norfolk’s patios.

Each petal has a dark cerise stripe, adding to the richness of its pink hues. Clematis ‘Acropolis’, a Boulevard Series gem, is a hardy, reliable grower suitable for all UK gardens. Its slender leaf stalks twine around canes, wires, or light trellises, no more than 15mm in diameter. Its 10cm-wide blooms appear in profusion, flowering from June to September.

The diminutive stature of this variety, reaching 1.2m high and 1m wide in 2–5 years, is extremely useful. Its adaptability to dappled shade makes it perfect for Suffolk country garden pergolas and arbour uprights where taller climbers are planted. It happily occupies their lower levels, conveniently flowering at a height where it can be appreciated from a garden bench.

Care Tips for Clematis Acropolis

  • Soil and Sun: Plant in well-drained soil; full sun or part shade.
  • Planting: Set in spring; soak roots before planting. Add well-rotted manure to the compost at the base of the pot to encourage deep rooting.
  • Watering: Keep moist in first year, watering at stem base; tolerates moderate dry spells once established.
  • Pruning and Training: Cut back to 30cm in autumn to boost next season’s flowering. Tie in the first few shoots after planting, it will find its own way up its supports thereafter.

During ‘Acropolis’ midsummer flourish, remove dead flowers to ensure a profusion of richly coloured blooms late into the season. This variety’s lush, mid-green foliage forms the perfect backdrop for its clematis compact pink climber blooms. Additionally, its petite size and vigorous growth make it essential for patio displays in pots, or for planting out, offering months of intense pink elegance.

Planting Ideas for Woodbine Clematis

Create a perfectly pink patio display, revel in hues of magenta, baby pink, and rosy tones by planting potted perennials around ‘Acropolis’. Salvias ‘Wendy’s Wish’, ‘Makris’, and ‘Ember’s Wish’ make a bushy, pollinator-attracting show around the base of its trellis or pergola upright.

Plant Wisterias ‘Hon Beni’ and ‘Yae-Kokuryu’ for a loftier pink and lilac accompaniment. Trachelospermum asiaticum ‘Pink Showers’ adds a scented addition in softer pale pink. Akebia quinata and Clematis ‘The President’ offer deeper purple and blue hues to contrast with, and dramatise, the pinks.
