Description

Family Papaveraceae
Originating from China.

  • Delicate-looking finely cut low mounds of deciduous foliage.
  • Beautiful intense clear blue tubular flowers appear in spring and summer.
  • Easy to grow in dappled woodland shade.

Fragile and delicate-looking, elegant and lacy, its slender stems bear lovely trifoliate leaves with broad and cleft leaflets, forming a dense herbaceous mound with a bright, cheerful green colour. In fact, this is a tough little plant that is native to forested mountainous regions where it frequently experiences harsh winter weather. Spreading by rhizomatous roots it slowly makes a spreading clump and can become summer dormant in very hot weather, taking a rest after its spring and early summer display until the following spring.

Its glorious blue flowers have an ethereal, delicate-looking china-blue colour. The hooded tubular blooms are darker than the species and are borne on red-flushed stems. Making a fantastic woodland ground cover, it is easy to grow in part shade and in pots.

Height and spread after 2-5 years 50cm x 50cm.
