An exceptional tree-like shrub that offers multi-seasonal interest. Panicles of, pink/purple filamentous flowers appear in late summer and are produced in such abundance that the tree becomes totally enveloped in a frothy floral haze, earning it its common name, ‘Smoke bush’. These waft over the oval dusky purple/glaucous leaves, adding smoke to the fire. In autumn Grace’s foliage blazes and its colour intensity and translucent quality could rival an end of season display laid on by that of any Acer. The shape of the leaves of this graceful plant are oval and about 15cm and pollarding (cutting branches back to two or three buds) will produce a luxuriant mass of larger leaves at the expense of flowers, as will a very rich soil.
Foliage/flowers – you decide. Plants benefit from pruning after flowering to prevent them from becoming leggy.
Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil in sun or part shade.
Height 6m. Spread 5m but can be pruned to restrict growth.
Height and spread after 2 – 3 years 1.5 x 1.5m
