Davidia involucrata is a medium-sized deciduous tree with handsome dark green, heart-shaped leaves with a white underside. In spring it produces an abundance of large white flowering bracts that look like handkerchiefs hanging from the branches.
Some say the flowers resemble the wings of doves, hence its common names. The slightest breeze will cause these to flutter. This tree takes a decade or so to produce a really spectacular display of flowers but it may produce a few in the preceding years.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in sun/part shade.
