Family Berberidaceae
Originating from Mediterranean and E. Asia
A slowly spreading, ground-covering deciduous perennial with pointed oval-shaped leaves, flushed red when young -quite stunning. Produces dainty red and yellow flowers on wiry stems, held above the foliage in spring. Valued for its weed suppressing habit and its ability to grow in difficult dry shade, Epimedium x rubrum adds colour and texture to woodland borders. Cut back dead leaves in early spring before new growth emerges.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in shade/part shade. Will tolerate dry soil once established.
Height and spread after 2 – 3 years 30cm x 30cm
Mature height and spread after 5 – 6 years 30cm x 60cm
