An evergreen, reed-like perennial with hollow, cylindrical stems with black horizontal bands. Very architectural and prehistoric in appearance.
In warmer climates it can be terribly invasive but is less so in the UK. Nevertheless, if you would take issue with an enthusiastic spreader like this, then it’s best to grow in a container.
Grow in moist soil or as a pond marginal, in sun/part shade. In severe winters it may die back to ground level but will quickly recover in spring.
