Invaluable for its slender and upright shape in small gardens, or as a striking accent amongst lower rounded plants, this species has great character, bearing its tiny, evergreen leaves on ascending branches. They are a dark and glossy with an oblong shape, rounded at their apex, and appear slightly sparsely on the stems, allowing the branching habit to be seen. The small apple blossom like flowers appear in mid summer and are a delicate white-pink colour with a deeper pink centre, appearing on plants even of a young age, they are borne in profusion and are much loved by bees.
Whilst this species prefers light and moist woodland soils it does better in full sun where it will quickly show its characteristic upright shape. It can be found growing on the banks of rivers in its native habitat where it can reach up to 15m tall, in the UK it has a more shrubby habit.
