Family Euphorbiaceae
Originating from S. France
- Dark evergreen leaves make a compact mound of foliage
- Huge lime green flowers turn pink and red as they mature.
- Easy to grow in full sun in any free-draining soil.
Deep green compact mounds of foliage bring an impressive show to the tricky lower levels of planting compositions, with a continual cycle of display. As the flowering stems become lax, they can be removed in mid-summer to reveal a new flush of healthy green, red-flushed leaves emerging in a compact mound of vigorous growth. As the stems gain height, their color intensifies to a purple-flushed green as the flower buds begin to form.
The flowers appear almost disproportionately large in this compact form of Martin’s Spurge, with brilliant lime-green globe-shaped clusters of young buds that elongate to cover the top third of the stems, forming spikes held well above the foliage. Each flower has a deep red center, surrounded by lime-green/yellow ‘petals’ that take on delicious pink hues before turning red and then drying to a tan color.
Such a showy plant, that contributes to planting schemes all season and is easy to grow in any soil in full sun or part shade, makes it a must-have species for Mediterranean, gravel, and coastal gardens. It is adaptable to English traditional and cottage styles as well and can be grown in pots.
Height and spread after 2 – 5 years 60cm x 60cm.
