Family Poaceae,
Originating from China.
A stunning clump-forming bamboo with small and delicate-looking leaves, densely covering the purple/red culms (canes). They emerge from new shoots which are covered in hairy red/green sheaths, upright at first, then arching into cascading plumes of foliage as they mature.
Growing from a pachymorph rhizome, the new shoots emerge close to the clump and do not ‘run’, although the base of the clump will slowly spread to 1.5m – 2m wide, the crown may arch over to 4m wide. A single culm may last for several years. After reaching its full height in its first year it grows new leaves each season, gradually becoming weighed down by the density of its foliage.
This is a valuable and adaptable variety, looking great in oriental, woodland, jungle, and gardens, and yet unlike many bamboos is refined and understated enough to look at home in more traditional English settings and contemporary gardens. Due to its tight clumping architectural form, it makes a great hedge and is happy in containers or large pots. A hardy and easy-to-grow species that will form large clumps.
Height and spread after 10 years 2.5m x 2m
