Family Poaceae
Originating from China
A relatively recent introduction this bamboo lives up to its name and has proved to be a strong grower, tolerant of shady conditions. It has a fine, upright habit and in spring it thrusts up new canes from the soil like mighty porcupine quills. The parchment-like leaf sheaths are pale cream/white and their arrangement around the cane is a remarkable feature. It has a tight, non-invasive clumping habit.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in sun/shade.
