Family Moraceae
Originating from Mediterranean.

  • Vigorous and reliable hardy fig tree
  • Good crops of brown fruit with red flesh
  • Large growing and ideal for training on a wall.

The most commonly grown variety of fig in the UK. Vigorous and hardy, it produces a reliable crop of brown fruit with red flesh. The leaves are large but not deeply lobed, and clothe the plant densely. Although figs are seen most commonly trained on a wall, they can be pruned to form any shape and are worthy of planting for their Mediterranean character as ornamental plants as well as for their fruits.

If the fruit crop is your main reason for planting, removal of some foliage around the fruit will help them to ripen in full sun. Pruning to form a large standard or an espalier is advisable before it makes a large specimen, requiring ladders to crop and prune.

Tolerant of poor and alkaline soil, but thriving with summer watering and feeding. Ideally suited for training on a south-facing wall.

Height and spread after 10- 15 years if not pruned 5m x 4m.
