Family Moraceae
Originating from Mediterranean and Western Asia.
- Ornamental large, broadly lobed leaves.
- Reliable black fruits with juicy red flesh.
- Small shrubby size, ideal for planting in pots.
One of our top-recommended trees. A fast-growing fig with large, broadly lobed leaves. Its abundant foliage makes a worthy ornamental tree, looking particularly good as a semi-formal specimen grown as a standard, with a clear trunk and round head foliage.
Better known in Europe, but seldom offered in the UK, it is heavily fruiting even when young, producing beautiful purple/blue fruit that matures to have black aromatic skin, and sweet, very juicy red flesh.
It’s a particularly hardy variety and does not grow into a large tree, ideal for growing in a pot or where space is limited. Tolerant of poor and alkaline soil, but thriving with summer watering and feeding.
Height and spread after 8 – 10 years 3m x 2m.
