Description

Family Moraceae.
Originating from W. Asia.

Known for its delicious fruit, the fig tree has a legendary place in horticulture with a history of cultivation stretching beyond Roman times. An incredibly adaptable plant that may be left to grow naturally into a small tree or large shrub, pruned hard or trained as an espalier on walls. It bears large rough textured leaves with a deeply lobed shape and a strong yellow colouration in the autumn. The thick stems and twigs are bare during the winter, except for late fruits which are much loved by wildlife. Grow in poor soil for the best fruit crop, in full sun. Height and spread after 10 – 15 years if not pruned 4m x 4m.

Height and spread in 4 – 5 years 3m x 2m
Mature height and spread in 10 – 12 years if not pruned 6m x 4m
