Family Rhamnaceae
Originating from Europe, Africa & Asia
- An outstandingly architectural, columnar, soft-textured large shrub
- Slender deciduous foliage is irresistibly tactile and turns deep gold in autumn
- Hardy and easy to grow in any soil type in sun or part shade
Slender and soft, architectural and uniquely textured, it has the finest of long, narrow, irresistibly tactile leaves that turn an intense shade of golden yellow before falling. They are borne on upright, slender branches and arch elegantly downwards, giving the plant a cascading appearance.
Its small flowers have only a slight visual impact, unless you are a passing pollinator, consisting of small clusters of cream star-shaped blooms held close to its stems, followed by red berries that mature to black.
An extremely useful species for adding structure to planting schemes where its columnar form can be used to frame views, paths and give context to seats, gazebos and garden ornaments. Its bold silhouette makes an interesting contrast with its soft foliage, small flowers and berries, creating interest and detail in gardens that is better appreciated at close quarters, planted close to sitting areas and paths.
Alder Buckthorn can look stunning planted with other columnar species such as Cupressus sempervirens ‘Totem Pole’, Calocedrus decurrens and Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Fastigiatum’. We’d love to see the potential for creating dramatic planting schemes using many columnar species en masse explored by our customers – be bold!
Of course, Frangular alnus ‘Ron Williams’ can also be used to create dynamic architectural compositions, setting off the rounded shapes of Euphorbia x pastuerii ‘Phrampton Phatty’ or Euphorbia mellifera, Choisya Greenfingers or Choisya x dewitteana Goldfingers.
This unique species is easy to grow in all soil types in full sun or part shade.
Height and spread after 5 – 10 years 2.5m x 1m.
