Family Zingiberaceae
Originating from Nepal and India
A vigorous ginger producing stout red shoots in spring followed by thick, sturdy stems and glossy, mid-green leaves with slightly downy undersides. Its characteristics are similar to Hedychium coronarium, except the white, butterfly-like flowers have a golden throat and while beautifully scented, in our experience don’t pack the same punch. It does however appear to be more vigorous, hardy and flowers slightly earlier.
Grow in fertile, moist soil in sun/part shade and lift before the first frosts. Indoors, grow in bright filtered light. Do not allow compost to dry. Divide and re-pot regularly to maintain health and vigour.
Height and spread after 1 – 2 years 1m x 50cm
Mature height and spread after 3 – 4 years 1.5m x 1m
