Originating from India, Himalayas
A dwarf form of the usually tall Khali ginger that we discovered at our nursery. It has proved to be reliably hardy over many seasons. Although its leaves and flowers are only slightly smaller than the true species it still has the typical Hedychium gardnerianum thick, upright stems and large, leathery, dark green leaves up to 30cm long. Bears cylindrical racemes of yellow flowers with red stamens. Powerfully scented, these inflorescence can reach 20cm in length and are produced from late summer through autumn, and are followed by attractive seed heads bearing capsules of red fleshy seeds. Essential in the jungle garden it works equally well and provides late colour in an herbaceous border.
Hedychium gardnerianum is evergreen and makes a stunning plant for a conservatory.
Grow in fertile, moist soil in sun/part shade and cover with a deep mulch of manure or compost if leaving out in the garden for winter. Indoors, grow in bright filtered light. Do not allow compost to dry. Divide and re-pot regularly to maintain health and vigour.
