Family Malvaceae
Originating from S. USA
A vigorous, woody-based, mound-forming perennial with finely dissected dark green, purple flushed leaves. This Hibiscus would earn its keep in the garden for its foliage alone but wait till you see the flowers! Massive, deep red, dinner-plate size flowers, up to 30cm in diameter on a mature plant, from late summer, through autumn. They appear to be made of crepe paper and last but a day but deadheading gives a long-lasting floral display.
Very late to reappear after winter so do not presume dead! The new foliage may not emerge until May/June but growth is extremely vigorous.
Grow in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in full sun.
Eventual mature plant size :
Height 1.2m
Spread 1.2m
