Family Myrtaceae
Originating from Australia and New Zealand
A bushy, compact, evergreen shrub with tiny, prickly, burgundy flushed leaves. In late spring it begins to produce an abundance of long-lasting, fully double, deep red flowers. These are magnets for bees, and it is from Leptospermum nectar that the rare, expensive and much-hyped Manuka honey comes.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Leptospermum needs to be grown against a warm sunny wall or in a very sheltered garden.
Height and spread after 2 – 3 years 1.2m x 80cm
Semi mature height and spread after 4 – 5 years if not clipped or pruned 2m x 1.5m
Potential mature height and spread after 8 – 10 years 3m x 3m
