Family Fabaceae
Originating from Japan, China
Cascades of deep pink flowers seem to explode from the top of the pant on lax branches creating an eye-catching spectacle from afar. On close inspection, the slender branches are covered in delicate, deciduous trifoliate leaves, (one leaflet facing forward and one to each side) in a cheerful mid-green colour. The flowers are similar in structure to the sweet pea and have a fleshy appearance. They populate the branches of the plant in dense clusters, weighing the plant down with their abundance. The flowers’ colours are the standout quality of Thunbergs Clover Bush – mainly of a rich rose pink but with hues of purple and even inky blue, and as they age whiter tones creep into the petals. The complex tonality of the blooms gives a depth and richness of colour to the whole plant that is quite unique.
The plant is late into growth and the flowers do not appear until August/September, making a valuable late season display. The branches die back to ground level in all but the mildest winter and should be cut back in the spring before the new growth appears. Grow in well-drained soil in full sun.
