A fast growing deciduous conifer, making an excellent specimen tree. The base of the trunk is flared, providing stability for such a large, fast growing tree and the bark is orange/ brown, fissured and peeling. New leaves are a bright fresh green, becoming foxy brown before falling in autumn. Although its mature size would deter many gardeners, with a little skill and imagination its size can be restricted and its shape can be influenced with pruning and training, making it ideal for Japanese style gardens or Bonsai.
One of very few deciduous conifers Dawn redwood is a relic of prehistoric times and was thought to be extinct until 60 years ago when it was discovered in China. Proving easy to grow it is now popular in parks and gardens throughout the world but remains critically rare in the wild.
Grow in humus rich moist soil in sun. Will tolerate waterlogged soil.
