Osmunda regalis, 3L plants
Family Osmundaceae
Originating from America, Europe and Asia
Regal indeed, the arching and elegant fronds of this large and luxuriant fern are incomparably elegant and architectural. Resembling ostrich plumes, the large fronds can reach up to 2m long, growing in perfect conditions on the banks of streams or ponds. It is adaptable to drier conditions where it can still make an impressive specimen, bearing bipinnate leaves that have broad oval leaflets, making a frothy clump, with a central mass of upright spore bearing fronds adding to the display late in the season.
Our Osmunda regalis 3L plants are easy to grow in moist woodland soil, or in boggy conditions – with their roots in water (but crowns not submerged), on a stream or pond bank. If moist or wet at the roots they are equally happy in full sun, or dappled shade.
Height and spread after 5 – 10 years 2.5m x 1m.
