Family Poaceae
Originating from China
Phyllostachys aurea is very handsome, well-known but variable species, usually clump-forming in the UK, with tightly packed canes, however in warmer countries it can be a rampaging thug.
It is commonly called ‘Golden Bamboo’ but oddly there is nothing golden about Phyllostachys aurea. It has lustrous green canes with very pronounced swellings below the nodes and a profusion of lush green leaves. The only time it is yellow is if it is starved of nutrients. Needs good light and is not suitable for growing in shade.
