Family Pinaceae
Originating from Japan
An extremely rare pine that appears to have turquoise foliage, but in fact each needle has shades of green and silver. Held in a stiff upright position each one has a twist in it, giving the plant a ‘bristly’ look. The upswept branches give the plant a graceful, slender appearance. Red male flowers appear profusely in spring, followed by tan-coloured female cones that persist on the plant throughout the season. Rarely seen in the UK, this slow growing form of the Japanese White Pine is from artisan Dutch growers, and is probably 10 – 12 years old already. A hardy and easy to grow species thriving in a wide range of soil conditions in full sun.
