(Saphire Japanese White Pine)
Family Pinaceae
Originating from Japan
Silver/green short needles that appear almost turquoise are held in a stiff upright position on the open and upswept branches. Red male flowers appear in spring, followed by tan-coloured female cones. A slow growth rate makes it suitable for small gardens where it can be grown in a pot as a patio plant, or planted in the ground. It has the potential to form a Niwaki ‘life-size’ bonsai shape if tip growth is pinched out. Rarely seen in the UK, this slow growing form of the Japanese White Pine is from artisan Dutch growers, and is probably 10 – 12 years old already. A hardy and easy to grow species thriving in a wide range of soils in full sun.
