Family Pittosporaceae
Originating from New Zealand.
Frothy, softly textured, billowing clouds of tiny evergreen, glossy leaves are beautifully marked with yellow splashes. The small leaves are borne elegantly on upright branches with an open and airy form, adding to the plant’s willowy, gentle character which sways in the lightest breeze. It forms an upright shape whilst young, broadening with age, and becoming a large and striking shrub. The new shoots have an exquisite black colour, contrasting with the foliage and making a very classy, distinctive-looking plant. It makes a wonderful contrast to plants with bolder, architectural, and dark foliage.
During spring and summer, it bears tiny black/dusky purple flowers on the new shoots, with deep golden stamens at their centre. Their unique, deep and spicey, musky/jasmine scent is strangely difficult to smell close-up but can be enjoyed wafting some distance from the plant.
Easy to grow in any soil type in full sun or part shade, this is an invaluable plant for its reliable and adaptable growth, responding to clipping by producing dense foliage, it is ideal for hedging and topiary. Great in pots and in coastal climates; we rate it as an indispensable variety.
Height and spread in 10 – 15 years 5m x 4m.
