Family Rosaceae
Originating from UK
Widely used as a street tree due to its high tolerance of pollution, this medium sized tree produces an abundance of flowers but these are small, produced at the same time as the leaves and are almost completely camouflaged by them. But it is the leaves themselves that make this tree so eye-catching. In spring they emerge like magnolia buds and the undersides are covered in a lustrous white down that reflects the light and makes them gleam like metal. The leaves in autumn turn a rich russet. It also produces an abundant display of bright red fruits that is usually short-lived as the berries are such a valuable and highly prized winter food for birds.
