Family Strelitziaceae
Originating from S Africa
Possibly the craziest, most distinctly structured and coloured flower of all, seemingly capturing the spirit of Africa, borne on slender stems over stout fans of miniature banana-like leaves. A truly spectacular unheated conservatory or summer patio plant, the ‘Bird of Paradise’s’, long-lasting beak-like shape and ‘wings’ of orange and inky blue petals are produced over an extended period in late winter, spring, and early summer. The fan-like evergreen leaves are borne on stems that slowly multiply, making a bushy clump. Easy to grow in any potting compost and in a sheltered sunny position.
Height and spread in 10 – 20 years 1.5m x 1m
