(Early-flowering borage, Abraham-Isaac-Jacob)
Family Boraginaceae
Originating from Eastern Europe
An invaluable plant for deep shade, even dry shade, Trachystemon produces starry blue flowers in spring followed by good sized heart-shaped, wavy-edged leaves, sometimes up to a foot long.
Not a show stopper but handsome enough and does a superb job of suppressing weeds and growing where nothing else stands a chance, like the base of trees.
Grow in dry soil in shade/part shade. In rich moist soil it can be invasive.
Height and spread after 2 – 3 years 40cm x 80cm
Semi mature height and spread after 4 – 5 years 40cm x 2m
