A sophisticated combination of dark and dusky colours, borne on dark stems, bearing delicate trifoliate leaves that have a downy covering of minute hairs. Its new shoots bear upright leaves, showing off their darkest purple sides, whilst the spikes of elegant tubular flowers are a light shade of lilac, standing out beautifully against the darker deciduous foliage. Fast-growing, but hardy in only the most sheltered parts of southern and coastal gardens, it is easy to grow in light, sandy soil and in pots, allowing it to be moved into a frost-free conservatory for winter in colder areas.
