A deciduous, self-clinging vine with large, almost leathery, 3 or 5 lobes leaves. This choice variety has rich purple shoots and young leaves, maturing to green before turning to rich red and orange tones in autumn. May be grown against a wall, a strong fence, or allowed to scramble up a mature tree. It produces an abundance of black grapes. Although these are not poisonous they are unpalatable but make a very good wine.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun/part shade.
Height and spread after 3 – 4 years 3m x 2m, depending on the available structure or other trees/plants for it to twine around.
Semi mature height and spread after 6 – 8 years if not pruned 8m x 5.
