Description

Family Blechnaceae
Originating from China and Japan

Huge lacy fronds emerge in red and orange tones maturing to a rich slightly glossy green colour. The graceful bi-pinnate leaves have an arching downswept form growing as a rosette from a central crown covered in brown hairs and scales. Its roots slowly spread, producing new crowns, eventually forming a colony. As the leaves mature they profusely develop tiny plantlets on their upper surface, giving them a frothy, cristate appearance. These may root if in contact with soil to make new plants.
Easy to grow in most soil conditions in moist part shade.

Height and spread after 5 – 10 years 1.5m x 2.5m.

N.B. The photos in this species profile are of Woodwardia orientalis, a very similar species who’s distinction from W. prolifera is unclear, as indeed, which species is in horticultural circulation.
