Family Araceae
Originating from South Africa.
Huge, jungly, and imposing, this indispensable exotic and jungle-style plant has the wow factor to take centre stage as a specimen plant or the vigour and spreading clump-forming habit to set the scene if planted en masse. Large, delightfully white-spotted, arrow-shaped leaves are borne on thick, fleshy stems growing from a central rosette, up to 1.5m tall.
Pure white spathe-shaped flowers appear in succession over a long period from mid-summer to autumn and tower a further 50 cm above the foliage. A large clump will bear many blooms en masse at any one time during the season, making a fantastically floriferous display.
Making the perfect Jungle garden plant in dappled shade, this spectacular plant can occupy the mid-level in dense planting schemes around Paulownia tomentosa, Trachycaprpus fortunei, and Musa basjoo. It looks great around water and in boggy soil, even growing well as a pond marginal.
A humus-rich fertile soil with plenty of moisture around its roots in a warm semi-shaded position will help the plant reach its potential size.
Height and spread in 5-10 years: 2.5m x 1.5m.
