Originating from India
Hedychium thyrsiforme is a foliage plant and this ginger deserves its place in any collection. The arching stems produce long, glossy green leaves that are crumpled and folded.
The flowers are produced fairly late in the season and can be damaged by early frosts. They are, however, delightful, being white with pale cream throats and very spiky (hence pincushion).
If grown or brought undercover before the autumn frosts the flowers can be much better appreciated.
