|Hours:||Minimum of 3 hours|
|Sector:||Propagation and Kitchen Garden|
|Description:||Our propagation department is expanding its successful volunteer programme. The range of plants we are growing is vast so the skills learned will be wide and varied. From sowing from seed, to dividing and taking cuttings from rare and tropical plants. You will get to work behind the scenes in our new on site poly-tunnels. A kitchen garden is under construction so there will be opportunities to get involved with design, growing of food for our cafes and planting the new area.
Our volunteers are highly valued members of our team, if you fancy having a go get in touch! There are no set hours, and you can specialise in your own particular area of interest if preferred. Contact Propagation Manager Niamh Mullally via the form, or call 01502 219110.
"I looked at a number of horticultural courses before volunteering and many seemed to fall between the 2 camps of either all theory, or a very practical course for those seeking full time employment in the industry. Very few seemed to combine the two successfully and so I looked around for an alternative solution.
Volunteering works best when both sides feel they are getting something out of the relationship. In the last year I have learnt a huge amount about a very wide variety of plants, their needs, problems and propagation by actually getting my hands dirty. In return, the Nursery builds a team of enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteers to help grow the business.
Hours are to suit me, but during the busier times I work one or two days each week. No day is the same and so there's plenty of opportunity to find your niche. The team works well together, with good planning and integration with all the Nursery staff . We even see the odd bribe of cakes from the Cafe with tea! Its fun, you learn a great deal, with every opportunity to take on responsibility if you want to. Please join us." Michael
"I've learned more about gardening from Niamh in the last year than I have from a lifetime of gardening, gardening programmes and books! Her enthusiasm is infectious and shes incredibly generous with her knowledge. Niamh is so appreciative of all the volunteers, and committed to us all getting the maximum value out of our time at Urban Jungle.
I volunteer once a week for about 5 hours and every week is different. I've learnt about all aspects of propagation with a great variety of plants and vegetables. I love working in the polytunnel with all the salads and edible flowers, and also around the table in the propagating polytunnel with Niamh, Jimmy and the whole team. I'm very much looking forward to the better weather and working outdoors to help create the Kitchen Garden!" Sue
