Family Asphodelaceae
Originating from New Zealand
Hands down the best black phormium, with a fantastic dusky purple/black colour and diminutive stature. Forming an elegantly arching clump of foliage to medium levels of planting schemes, its dark colour is precious for making the perfect foil to spiky or mound-forming Mediterranean-style plants especially those with silver foliage. 1.5m tall spikes bear exotic blood-red flowers in summer, standing well above the slowly spreading clump just 1m tall. Easy to grow in any soil or in pots, especially in contemporary-style gardens, keeping its dark colour best of all in full sun.
Height and spread after 2 – 5 years :
Height 1m (flower stems to 2m tall), Spread 1m.
