Originating from Chile.
Dramatic and attention-grabbing, its tall and elegant stems begin to shoot from a woody base in early spring and are gently upswept. Its lush, large grey-green, hairy perennial leaves are long and slender, oval-shaped, borne densely on the stems, growing vigorously and making a wide-spreading, bushy plant. The fast-growing upper parts of them are flushed red beneath the flowers. The whole plant is mildly toxic, containing many alkaloids that have ethnobotanical uses. The dried leaves are smoked in South America and are even used to treat nicotine addiction. Care should be taken when handling this plant, especially dried leaves.
‘Devil’s Tobacco’ produces a spectacular, profuse floral display that can last for over 2 months from mid to late summer, bearing numerous 30-40cm long spikes of magnificent deep magenta-red flowers. The upright racemes consist of many individual blooms with a dusky burgundy base and long, slender, elegantly formed tubular petals. They are attractively spaced on the flowering spike, giving ample room for their claw-shaped, spurred form to be admired.
