Family Pinaceae
Originating from Japan
An exciting dwarf pine, growing naturally into a small tree form with a ‘life-size bonsai’ character. It has an exceptionally dense crown of needles up to 100mm long, in a very dark matt green dusky colour that contrasts well with the flush of tan-coloured new growth’s ‘candles’ every spring. It makes an excellent pot plant on a patio or planted in groups, to create a serene composition with softer mound-forming plants, or stones and moss around them. Rarely seen in the UK, this plant is from artisan Dutch growers, and is probably 10 – 12 years old already. Succeeds best of all in neutral to acid sandy loam in full sun, but is tolerant of most soil conditions.
Height and spread after 5 – 6 years 1m x 1.5cm
Mature height and spread after 15 years + if not pruned 6m x 5m
