This style of garden can coax your attention away from the stress and busy-ness of everyday life. Nature’s wildness is captured and romanticised, distilled into a courtyard or garden context. Learning and mastering Niwaki, Bonsai and Topiary techniques, that may involve changing even the shape of a plant’s branching habits, can be very satisfying, and produce stunning results, but we have grouped together a range of plants that can achieve this look using lighter and easier pruning methods. We have expanded the scope of the style, adding to the traditional flowering cherry trees and peonies to include, magnolia, paulownia and camellia. Add these floral displays to the restrained palette of elegantly shaped foliage, and it is possible to bring together the reflective and serene, with effusive colour. We have included plants from Nepal, Taiwan and Korea in this style to expand the palate available to you, in addition to the more familiar Chinese and Japanese species.
