Family Dryopteridaceae
Originating from East Asia.
- A small fern with distinctive finely detailed leaves.
- Compact and densely crowded evergreen leaflets form a lush shuttlecock-shaped plant.
- Easy to grow in shade or semi-shade, making a great ground cover if planted in groups.
Elegant and finely detailed, its bright, cheerful arching fronds form a slowly spreading mound, making an excellent woodland groundcover when planted in groups at the front of woodland planting schemes, where it can be viewed at close quarters.
Each leaflet has a neatly serrated edge and is handsomely marked with black veins. They are crowded onto the arching central stem in a feather-like formation, terminating in a slender pointed leaflet. Its tufted shuttlecock form is particularly effective in woodland and oriental-style gardens where it thrives beside streams and amongst rockery.
Reliable and easy to grow in any soil and in pots in moist full or semi-shade. It is evergreen except in harsh winters.
Height and spread after 5 – 10 years 40cm x 40cm.
