Prairie

Prairie

Swaying drifts of elegant feathery grasses, a rich tapestry of colour provided by a multitude of blooms, the buzzing of bees and the thronging of birds set the scene for this expansive naturalistic approach to gardening. Space is required for this style to reach its full potential, allowing the large groupings of plants to be composed in bold and fluid groups. Structure and movement is provided by clumps of grasses with their coloured plumes of flower followed by seed heads, with bold swathes of perennials flowing between them. Most of the species used are under 2m tall, meaning that a prairie grows under a big sky, preferably with a low or distant horizon so that it is bathed in every hour of available sunlight. Many of the species used grow best on poor soil and require little care except perhaps support for the taller species while the planting is young.  The floral display can be extended by planting bulbs such as Tulips, Narcissus, Eremurus and Alliums for early display before the herbaceous species take over in summer. Even in winter, the Prairie garden retains its structure, and the beauty still shines through in the gracefully decaying foliage, while providing an outstanding habitat for wildlife.
