Originating from China. Robust and abundant, brilliantly colourful, deep glossy green, scented, floriferous and evergreen, the firethorn sounds like the perfect plant, yet it is so often overlooked. It can be grown as tightly clipped topiary or as a large rangy shrub, cloud pruned, grown in pots; its versatility makes it indispensable. It has a remarkable habit of flowering, (providing a feast for any passing pollinator) and producing abundant crops of loud and deep red berries, (loved by birds) even when tightly clipped. It makes the perfect climber when young, maturing into a woody wall shrub. Easy to grow in any soil in sun or part shade.
