Family Pinaceae
Originating from Asia Minor
Dense foliage is borne on the Oriental Spruce’s upswept branches and pendulous branchlets, with new needles emerging bright lemon yellow like decorative tassels at the tips of the branches 80 – 100mm long. Red male flower cones emerge in early spring followed by female seed cones, appearing in a rich purple colour up to 100mm long. They hang pendulously from the upper branches. Rarely seen due to the small numbers of growers grafting plants in the UK, this plant comes from artisan Dutch growers and is probably 10 – 12 years old already. Spruces are very easy to grow in any soil in full sun. Height and spread after 5 – 6 years 2m x 1.5m Mature height and spread after 15 years + 10m x 6m
