Quercus ilex, 3L plants
Family Fagaceae
Originating from S.W. Europe
With all the majesty of our native deciduous oak, this evergreen, stately, abundant large tree is adaptable to any pruning style, even topiary. Its beautiful dark green glossy foliage varies in individual plants, from large, oval, smooth margined, to small spiky shaped ones, in the genetic spectrum of the species. Tolerant of exposure to wind and maritime conditions, it is the perfect utilitarian shelter belt tree, yet with careful pruning can become a showy architectural shrub, evoking a venerable, serene specimen in miniature. Undemanding in any soil in full sun or part shade.
Height and spread after 20 – 50 years 15m x 12m if not pruned.
