Family Adoxaceae
Europe, N. Africa, S.W. Asia
A highly ornamental deciduous shrub with finely dissected, almost black leaves. It produces large panicles of scented pink flowers held on purple stems in spring followed by black fruits in late summer/autumn that make excellent wine. ‘Eva’ will make a very dramatic, small specimen tree, but it is possible to restrict its size, and grow it as a foliage plant by pruning back to 20cm above ground level in early spring. Looks sensational against golden foliage plants.
This is a tough, easy to grow plant and will thrive in the poorest of soils in sun or part shade. It will even tolerate water-logged soil.
Eventual mature plant size :
Height 3m
Spread 2m
