Family Cactaceae
Originating from Mexico.
Titanic, huge grey/green rounded, almost spineless pads make this outstanding cactus a must-have plant for desert gardens. Its rapid growth and extremely large flattened leaves make an architectural statement amongst other succulent or spiky plants in Mediterranean gardens, or as a summer centrepiece for patios, planted in large pots. Its spectacular flowers are borne on the margins of the foliage and are followed by the famous edible prickly pear fruit. Half hardy in southern and coastal gardens if planted in very free-draining soil in full sun, requiring frost-free shelter in colder locations.
Height and spread after 5 – 10 years 1.5m x 1m
