Family Amaryllidaceae
Originating from S. Africa.
An invaluable plant for all-summer-long floral display, forming slowly spreading clumps of slender dark green chive-like perennial foliage. Its scented lilac/pink flowers have deeper cerise hues and are held on slender stems well above the foliage and can appear at any time over a long period from summer into autumn. The profuse floral display of tubular starry flowers, widely flared at their tips are deep pink in bud and open to the darkest of the Tulbaghias. They are held on slender stems, making a swaying mass of flowers over the foliage followed by green seed pods which darken to a tan brown.
The foliage has a pungent smell of onions or garlic and can be used in cooking or salads, similar to chives. This delicate form of ‘Society garlic’ looks great amongst spikey Mediterranean plants where it looks most affective planted in drifts. Equally at home in traditional English borders, pretty in pots and in coastal gardens. Easy to grow in most soil types in full sun.
Height and spread after 3 – 5 years 50cm x 50cm
